Bahraini calligrapher sparks global interest in Arabic calligraphy

A Bahraini calligrapher, Ibrahim Ubaid, has shared how his initiative of handwriting the Holy Quran sparked increased interest in Arabic calligraphy worldwide.

AhlulBayt News Agency: A Bahraini calligrapher, Ibrahim Ubaid, has shared how his initiative of handwriting the Holy Quran sparked increased interest in Arabic calligraphy worldwide.

Raised in a family renowned for owning some of Bahrain's largest libraries, including the National Library and the Ubaid Library, Ubaid also founded a distinctive library dedicated to Arabic calligraphy. Established in 2014, his "Calligrapher's Library" continues his family’s legacy of promoting literature and art, dating back to 1929.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ubaid began transcribing the Quran and reflected on the exclusivity of Quranic calligraphy. He questioned why individuals couldn’t create their own handwritten versions of the Quran. This led to his innovative idea of printing the 30th Juz with blank spaces, allowing readers to write in their own handwriting, ensuring no part of the text is omitted.

Ubaid’s concept has gained international traction, receiving praise from countries like Kyrgyzstan, Bosnia, Turkey, and Pakistan, sparking a global resurgence in Arabic calligraphy interest.
